How to break the cycle of emotional eating

March 10, 2025 · In: Emotional eating, Nutrition, Self Care

Woman struggling making food decision between healthy and unhealthy food

Emotional eating is very common, and most people have experienced it in some form.We could also argue that most eating is emotional to a degree. But emotional eating start to become a problem when it interferes with your healthy nutritional needs, and when it negatively impact your life, relationships or health.

For example cooking and enjoying a delicious meal with your loved ones, is definitely an “emotional” experience, but provided that the meal strikes a decent balance between good taste and nutrition, it is an entirely a positive one.

On the other hand, if you struggle to resist cakes and sweets, overeating and piling on the sugar, refined carbs and calories, you may have a problem.

The occasional treat is fine, but if you have a habit of using food to cope with your emotions, reward yourself or eating when you are full, this can, in the long term, have a detrimental effect on your health, well-being and self-esteem.

Overcoming emotional eating requires a holistic approach

Overcoming emotional eating requires a holistic approach, which includes nutrition, eating psychology, lifestyle and behavior change strategies. In my 3-step method, I use mindfulness, neuroscience and nutritional education to help my clients overcome emotional eating and sugar addiction.

1. Nutritional

  1. Re-balance your diet, shifting to nutrient-dense foods and including enough proteins and fibers in your meals is a fundamental step to reduce cravings.
  2. Align with your circadian rhythms. Following your body’s natural rhythms and reconnecting to your hunger and fullness cues, if fundamental to reduce sugar cravings and binge eating.
  3. Reduce/remove, sneaky, hidden sugar, and Ultra Processed Foods that are engineered to be addictive.

2. Emotional

  1. Recognize and name your emotions. As human beings, we tend to be scared of negative emotions, but they are part of the full human experience. Emotions are data that can help us inform our choices in life.
  2. Learn to sit with your emotions. Making space between the emotion and the response gives you time to calm the nervous system,
  3. Identify your triggers. What is your most common trigger? Is it tiredness, anxiety, boredom or reward? Or maybe lack of sensory satisfaction in your previous meal?
  4. Let go of guilt and shame. Change your internal conversation.
The emotions wheel
The cycle of emotional eating wheel

3. Lifestyle

Health is holistic. For example, research shows that if you don’t sleep well, you are more likely to experience increased hunger and cravings of sugary and high palatable foods.

Lack of meaningful in-person, social connection in our “hyper-connected” digital world, can drive many people to compensate with food.

Nourish your life. When you feel the emotional urge to eat, ask yourself: what do I really need in my life right now. Is it connection, creativity, sense of purpose?

  • Understanding how lifestyle choices can help you reduce sugar cravings and emotional eating, is fundamental to succeed.
  • Shift the focus from food to other areas of your life that can give you a sense of satisfaction or calm your nervous system, like exercise, working on a project you really care about, breathing exercises, dancing, spending time with friends.

Coping with emotional eating is a work in progress, not a finishing line, but one that can bring you a deeper sense of satisfaction better self-care habits and a healthier life. Most people will need some guidance at some point of their journey. So, if you are struggling with emotional eating or simply cannot resist sugary foods, sit back, relax and remove any guilt of shame you might feeling around it.

Are you interested in working with me?

Are you struggling with emotional or binge eating? I have been working with clients struggling with emotional and binge eating, yo-yo dieting and sugar addiction for a few years.

My approach is supportive and person-centered. We will start with what is easy for you do, helping you understand your triggers, and create non-food coping mechanisms whilst retaining pleasure in the food you eat.

How long is the program

Normally we recommend a 12-week program, but I understand that you might be hesitant because you tried other methods before, so you can start with 6-week program and take it from there.

Send me a message using the form below, and then we can take it from there.

Stop feeling guilty about emotional or binge eatin Stop feeling guilty about emotional or binge eating, and start taking action!

Emotional eating is NOT...
A lack of self-discipline, willpower or a character flaw.

Emotional eating is a learned coping mechanism...

But physiological, behavioural, and emotional loops keep you stuck in the habit.

Learn to bypass those loops, and you will be FREE.

My 12-week Emotional Eating Program will help you do just that.

Giving you the tools to deconstruct and respond to your cravings and urges.

Nobody is asking you to go from rich, processed fo Nobody is asking you to go from rich, processed foods to go and live off salads!

But many of my clients do!

They are on their "best behaviour" living off salads and being so "healthy" during the day only to splurge or binge in the evenings on the "wrong foods".

Here is the truth...
Your taste buds and reward patterns in the brain don't get retrained only because you "force yourself to".

They are independent of your #willpower. Its bichemistry.

What works is finding a compromise that helps you slowly unwind those patterns, with food that you actually enjoy.

Good food is still part of the equation.

If you want to eat food that you enjoy and that supports your health, decreasing emotional eating, binges and sugar addiction, DM or comment FOOD and I will send you more info about my programs

HAVE YOU TRIED INTUITIVE EATING WITHOUT FEELING TH HAVE YOU TRIED INTUITIVE EATING WITHOUT FEELING THE BENEFITS?
This is the reason why...

✨ Lack of nutritional and lifestyle education...✨

Yes, without proper nutritional or lifestyle education, Intuitive Eating is like navigating in the dark.

Without understanding how lifestyle impacts your weight, hunger, and fullness signaling, hormonal release, and energy levels, you will always be stuck and most likely struggling to manage your weight or cravings.

You will feel that "nothing works" for you...

That is the reason why nutritional and lifestyle education are central parts of both my Intuitive Eating Coaching and Emotional Eating Program.

And believe me, it does make a huge difference.

You will learn how to maintain your blood sugar balance without much effort,
confidently choose a meal when eating out, reducing food noise and stress around mealtime.

You will learn to make smart food choices for you and your family, and finally enjoy the food you eat.

Without stress, but with awareness.

You being in charge of food choices, not the food controlling you...

These Mango and Amaranth Parfaits are delicious and ready in 5 minutes!

What is amaranth?
Amaranth is a seed like quinoa, and it is naturally gluten-free and nutrient-dense.

How do I pop amaranth?
Popping amaranth is really easy and quick; just place it in a hot pan or skillet and wait 20-30 seconds.

What does amaranth taste like?
It has a nutty flavor, and when puffed, it can be used to add extra crunchiness and replace granola.

Use full-fat natural yogurt.
Low-fat yogurt lacks vital nutrients and has chemical additives (sometimes even sugar or sweeteners)

When it's hot, you also need to replenish minerals (electrolytes) lost with sweat.
Fresh, raw veggies and fruits have plenty of minerals, and they have a high water content, helping you replenish both water and electrolytes.

Salt is also an electrolyte that needs to be replenished with sweat. (a tiny amount)

A nice salad with arugula (magnesium), tomato, cucumber (potassium), some crumbled feta (calcioum), and a dash of sea salt can be a great starter for your meal and help replenish those electrolytes!

Mindfulness is the practice of paying attention to Mindfulness is the practice of paying attention to your present moment experience with awareness and without judgment.

Instead of being caught up in worries about the future or replaying the past, mindfulness involves noticing what’s happening right now—your thoughts, emotions, bodily sensations, and surroundings.

This can help you calm your mind and break the cycle of negative thoughts and habits.

You can easily introduce mindfulness to your daily life by avoiding distractions and focusing to the present moment...

Put away your mobile phone and have a meaningful conversation with a loved one, free from distractions.

Eat a meal mindfully, paying attention to the flavors, textures, and aromas of your food.

Read a book without interruptions, fully immersing yourself in the words and ideas on the page.

Emotional eating is often a "coping strategy", and when this coping strategy is deeply ingrained in your brain, it starts on autopilot as soon as you feel a trigger.

The first step in overcoming emotional eating is to "pause" for a moment when you feel the urge to overeat and start noticing how you feel both physically and emotionally.

As soon as you "pause," you are slowing down the "autopilot" that drives your emotional eating, decreasing the urge, and giving you the time to understand your personal #triggers .

If you want to know more on how to break down the cycle of emotional eating, follow me, or DM "noticing" so I can send you the link to the article where I explain this in more detail.

The 10 principles of Intuitive Eating. What is Int The 10 principles of Intuitive Eating.
What is Intuitive Eating?

Intuitive Eating is an evidence-based method developed by dietitians Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch that aims to break the cycle of dieting and reconnect you with your body cues, including hunger and fullness signals.

📌 Research suggests intuitive eating may be associated with:

⚡Better relationship with food
⚡Less binge eating and guilt around eating
⚡Improved body image
⚡Lower stress around meals
⚡More sustainable eating habits over time

While this sounds great, Intuitive Eating may require guidance to be implemented effectively and support your long-term health.

Until it becomes a sort of "addiction," or it leads to unwanted weight gain, bloating and hormonal disruption, or worse, a feeling of inadequacy and shame.

But once you understand the biology behind this "food addiction," you can make better choices and build better tools to deal with emotions.

The result is a liberating sensation and the sense of being more in control when it comes to food, not the other way around.

And with it better health: less bloating, more energy, better digestive health, less inflammation and easier weight loss.
